MY FIRST ATTEMPTS AT MAKING PALLET FURNITURE

I DECIDED THAT SINCE I HAD SO MANY WOOD WORKING TOOLS...THAT I WAS USING TO REMODEL MY HOUSE BY MYSELF...I MIGHT AS WELL LEARN TO MAKE FURNITURE...I HAD NO CLUE HOW TO BEGIN...SO I TRIED USING A CROWBAR TO TEAR DOWN THE PALLETS...THAT WAS A NO GO...THEN I TRIED THE RECIP SAW AND ALMOST SHOOK MY SELF TO DEATH! SO I SAT THERE AND STUDIED THE WHOLE SITUATION...AND GOT OUT THE CIRCULAR SAW...LAY THE PALLET ON THE DRIVEWAY AND MADE A CHALK LINE AND PROCEEDED FROM THERE... I CUT THE ENDS OFF AND BEING CREATIVE...I SAW IMMEDIATELY HOW IT WOULD END UP...DID I MENTION I HAD USED ANOTHER PALLET TO BUILD MYSELF A WORK TABLE...TO MAKE PUTTING THE FURNITURE TOGETHER A LOT EASIER...CAUSE SQUATTING KILLS MY KNEES FOR LONG PERIODS OF TIME...AND I PLACED IT BESIDE MY ROLLING CARD WHICH HAS ALL MY CLAMPS AND SCREWS AND NAIL GUN ETC...IF YOU GET CONFUSED...THERE ARE THOUSANDS OF PHOTOS ON PINTEREST AS WELL AS OTHER SITES- SEVERAL YOU CAN FIND ON FACEBOOK OR GOOGLE THEM... Yes, YOU CAN PAINT ON SLATE TILE WITH ACRYLIC PAINTS!

I decided to try my hand at painting on some slate tile... I just love the beautiful colors of slate.  Clean you slate with water and let dry.  Either sketch off a design or trace using white or light tracing paper. Lay out your craft paints and be sure to have some small brushes for tiny detail... you can use toothpicks for things like dots...just use your imagination. I am thinking about using a drill press to make a hole in mine so I can hang them with leather or wire.( will try it on a scrap piece first. They can also be used on your wall, follow grouting methods for this. Or you can just attach to different things or get small easels to sit them on. For these I used some bright leather acrylic paints... and when they were dry, I sealed them with a quality sealer made for slate tile, don't have the bottle handy but it was in a yellow bottle and it was a milky liquid. I applied two coats of this... it really brings out the colors of the acrylic and the slate itself. These are 4 x 4 in. tiles. Hope you enjoy my slate tile creations...

Changes... Got engaged...and my "Crappie Wedding"!!!

Hey Y'all! It's been a while ....things have been going on in my life.... my son moved in...my daughter moved out...I have been remodeling my house mostly by myself...and lastly... I just got married to my sweetheart and best friend Joey...plus I moved to South Carolina...and now we are searching for the perfect place on the lake!
About the wedding... just a bit of info first... here in SC... they love to crappie fish... in MS, we pronounce it Crop-e...but in SC they pronounce it just like it is spelled...Crap-e! So on a hot Saturday morning my true love and I went crappie fishing... we were at our friends, Melodi and Danny's and in Danny's boat... when we got in after a very successful trip, Joey just out of the blue asked me if I wanted to get married that day on the boat! I said yes, well it wasn't the most beautiful of events as we had nothing but shorts and tops to wear and the wind was blowing as it was about to come a storm. I rigged up some earrings for the occasion...made with crappie fishing gig called sexy tails!  Anyway... Melodi rushed around and found a minister who could marry us...her daughter, Ray made us a strawberry wedding cake... Joey called several friends, to invite them...but even after talking to me, they did not believe him because he is always playing jokes on everyone... Meanwhile Danny readied the boat at the dock and Melodi gave me away and made photos...funny part was, even though we had not taken our license out of the truck , our wedding bands were back home 50 miles away...so we came up with a borrowed ring for me and a key chain to fit Joey's finger. Joey being the prankster and joker he is didn't fail me...as i was slipping the key ring on his finger and saying my vows, he said, in his Southern drawl, "I like my rang"... needless to say, I cracked up! Now this wedding might now have been a brides dream wedding, but it was such a fun and relaxed event that no one had time to get nervous at all...and did I mention Danny photo bombed the wedding pictures which made us laugh even more!
I hope I can keep this blog updated since now I am also painting fish on boards and being very domesticated. And I am becoming quiet the fisher woman!

Hey all... sorry I have not been on for a while... been busy making patterns and building things, and painting things. Just finished cutting out a cute little toddler rocking rooster...have to go to the depot and pick up the garnet paint I want to use on it. it is the smallest rocking toy I have ever seen...but its for toddlers or just for decor. Still have to make the hand hold and sand and put it together. This is my first toy to build. I am going to be doing vintage toys including pull toys, games, toys from the 1910-1930. Simple toys because I think kids actually had more fun with them than kids have nowadays with computers. They got exercise and fresh air back then! 
I found some old books with toys in them...but not directions... I am changing some of them up. Older patterns weren't as specific back then. But they used to teach kids in school about woodworking.  I found some really cool games toys as well... My favorites are the scooters and wagons and pull toys. Acrobatic type toys simple made...but going to be a challenge trying to figure them out. 
A lot of the toys don't have measurements. I will even be making the wooden wheels for some of the toys.
I don't even have a shop or place to build. I have a small table and I am collecting wood and stacking it in a small little shed along with all my woodworking tools. But someday hope to have a large shop so I can really get down to business. Working outside can be a challenge with the bouts of rain and now hot weather is here.
Oh, and by the way... This little rocking rooster is only my second woodworking project... Yes I have most of the tools I need but I used all those for remodeling my house
I am also trying to design some simple small pieces of furniture.  And some of these  pieces will not have screws or nails in them...
I am just fascinated by how things used to be made for the home. And yes, I will be making a lot of it without electrical tools... Old fashioned hand tools.
So forgive me if I don't make post everyday... I am learning all the different ways of joining wood pieces. I am teaching myself and also look forward to pallet and reclaimed wood projects.
I have also been collecting old barbed wire, horse shoes, pallets, etc., and doing research on milk paints, chalkboard paints and wood joinery. And burlap...jute twine...
I will add photos asap.
My project to cut out today will be a few pull toys. I bought some nice finished plywood to do some of the toys with. And plan on getting some Pine boards this weekend . I am so excited about learning and designing! Got to get housework done now... rain will be coming Saturday-Wed!

can be used as painting design on furniture, quilt pattern, embroidery pattern, to make pillows, to cut out with a jigsaw from thin plywood to make a door hanger, cut the different parts out of felt or construction paper for a fun kids project...or cut from half inch plywood  and add rustic wire and bow, applique on a smock ...paint it, color it , etc!
